Title: Captain Phillips
by: Lili Pad
The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi) who takes him and his unarmed ship, hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ crew. Both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
Captain Phillips is a prime example of Hollywood’s unrivalled ability to rapidly reprocess a story from a headline to marquee. It is splendidly mounted building to an almost unbearably tense climax. This is a message through a movie concerned with the effects of globalization.
It was powerfully acted by Tom Hanks. Captain Phillips offers filmgoers a Hollywood biopic done right – and offers Tom Hanks a showcase for yet another brilliant performance.
